I'm sure you are wondering, just like all the people who passed us on the road that day, what a good little Mormon family is doing posing in front of the Nephi State Liquor Agency.
Well, it's quite a fun little story. Ryan's Great Grandpa, Robert E. Winn, was mayor of Nephi when his father, Randy, was a boy. As part of the Mayor's job, he worked in the State Liquor Agency. One day Mayor Winn had to leave the store for a bit and left his two grandsons to watch the place. Randy noticed that there were some posters advertising all the great and wonderful liquors that were sold in the store and he wondered why they weren't up on the windows. So he and his brother taped all the posters up with satisfaction. When the Mayor arrived, they expected praise for their retail genius, but instead their grandfather said something like, "Boys, take those posters down. We don't actually want to SELL this stuff! It's bad for you."
It was too late for Randy, though, he'd already got the "retail bug". He owned an LDS bookstore for many years. Who knows, it might have been a liquor store if his grandpa hadn't discouraged him.
